What Are TES Tanks?

A Thermal Energy Storage (TES) tank is a heavy-duty, pressurized fluid vessel designed to store and release thermal energy on demand. Acting as a bulk "thermal battery" within a facility's HVAC or process cooling infrastructure, a TES tank decouples thermal energy generation from immediate cooling consumption

 

How They Work:

TES tanks keep a natural separation layer, called the thermocline, dividing cold water, which sinks from warm water that floats to the top of the tank.

In high-density mission critical environments, TES tanks act as a vital buffer to ensure uninterrupted thermal performance and cost efficiency. By integrating pressurized ASME-certified tanks into your infrastructure, facilities can optimize energy consumption and maintain system reliability across three essential functions:

  • Continuous Cooling: Pressurized ASME-certified TES tanks operate as a thermal buffer. Primary/secondary chilled water pumps pull stored cold water from the tank, guaranteeing zero interruption in supply water temperature until chillers recover.

  • Peak Shifting: Data Centers run chillers at full capacity during off-peak hours storing lower-kW/ton chilled water. During peak daytime hours, or extreme weather conditions, the facility will discharge the TES tank to supplement the chillers, lowering peak Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and operational spend. 

  • Loop Stability: An integrated TES tank lowers return-water temperature surges and pressure fluctuations, stabilizing loop pressures across massive facility infrastructure.
